Cocteau, Jean
► (1889-1963) Polígrafo francés. Eterno innovador, se dedicó a la literatura y también a la pintura y al cine, con películas como Orfeo (1949). Autor de novelas, piezas teatrales, ensayos y poesía, participó en las vanguardias. Entre sus obras destacan El Potomak (1919) y La voz humana (1930).

Poeta, dramaturgo y director cinematográfico francés. Publicó su primera antología de poemas La Lámpara de Aladino a los 19 años. Se convirtió tempranamente al catolicismo, aunque poco después renunció a la religión. Durante la primera guerra mundial fue chofer de ambulancia en el frente belga, donde ambientaría su novela Thomas l'imposteur [Tomás, el impostor] (1923). En los años de su adicción al opio produjo algunas de sus creaciones más importantes, entre ellas la obra de teatro Orfeo (1926) y la novela Los niños terribles (1929). La máquina infernal es considerada, su obra de teatro más destacada (1934). Su primera película fue La sangre de un poeta (1930); retomó la producción cinematográfica en la década de 1940, primero como guionista, luego como director, y filmó películas tan admirables como La bella y la bestia (1945), Orfeo (1949) y Le Testament d'Orphée (1960).En el campo musical, Cocteau estuvo asociado con el grupo de compositores conocido como Les Six (Los seis); entre sus aportes se cuentan los guiones de ballet para Erik Satie (Parade, 1917) y Darius Milhaud (Le Boeuf sur le toit [El buey en el tejado], 1920), así como sus libretos para Igor Stravinski (Edipo rey, 1927) y Milhaud (La voz humana, 1930). También fue artista visual e ilustró varios libros con sus coloridos dibujos y trabajó además como diseñador.
